A true SCBWI Israel author-illustrator collaboration ❤️

Did you know that the relationship between picture-book authors and illustrators is very different in Israel and the U.S.? 

In Israel, the author and illustrator collaborate, and often meet regularly to discuss the book. In the U.S., on the other hand, authors and illustrators don’t usually work together. The author backs off and waits patiently to see the sketches, then the final illustrations and cover. 

When Kar-Ben publisher Joni Sussman told me she’d found the perfect illustrator for my upcoming book Baila the Klopper, I was thrilled to discover that she’d picked Shirley Waisman, illustrator coordinator of SCBWI Israel. Being more used to the Israeli style of working together, Shirley convinced me to sit down with her (over Zoom) to read the manuscript and chat about illustration ideas.

It was the first time an illustrator had asked me to collaborate in any way. I resisted it at first. Shirley is so creative that I didn’t want to get in the way. I needed her to know that I trusted her judgment, and frankly, I love the surprise of seeing the illustrations for the first time. 

Eventually, I gave in. Sitting down with Shirley was an eye-opening experience: talking things through, googling picture ideas, chatting about the characters, and thinking about my book in a way I never had before. 

Being part of SCBWI has given me a deeper understanding of what illustrators do to make our stories stand out. After all, a picture book is nothing without pictures. But it’s also true that pictures are nothing without stories – even wordless books tell fascinating stories! Neither is easy to create, and both are absolutely essential.

Hearing from illustrators, art directors, agents, and publishers at SCBWI programs over the years, I’ve learned so much about how words and pictures play together to create incredible books kids and parents love. And it’s made me a better writer and a more appreciative reader along the way. For example, I now enjoy spotting elements that appear in the illustrations but aren’t part of the text–they spring straight from the illustrator’s imagination and make the story that much richer.

ידעתם שמערכת היחסים בין כותבים למאיירים שונה מאוד בישראל ובארה"ב? בישראל, הסופר והמאייר משתפים פעולה ולעתים קרובות נפגשים באופן קבוע כדי לדון בספר. בארה"ב, לעומת זאת, סופרים ומאיירים בדרך כלל לא עובדים כלל יחד. המחבר שולח את כתב היד לעורך וממתין בסבלנות לראות את הסקיצות ויותר מאוחר את האיורים הסופיים ואת העטיפה. 

כשהמו"לית של קאר-בן, ג'וני זוסמן, הודיעה לי שהיא מצאה את המאיירת המושלמת לספר החדש שלי "ביילה הקלופר", התרגשתי לגלות שהיא בחרה בשירלי ויסמן, רכזת המאיירים של SCBWI ישראל! שירלי, שהיתה רגילה לסגנון הישראלי של עבודה משותפת, שכנעה אותי לשבת איתה (בזום) לקרוא את כתב היד ולשוחח על רעיונות לאיור.

זו הייתה הפעם הראשונה שמאייר ביקש ממני לשתף פעולה בדרך כלשהי! ובהתחלה, התנגדתי. שירלי כל כך יצירתית שלא רציתי להפריע לה. היה לי חשוב שהיא תדע שאני סומכת על שיקול דעתה. ולמען האמת, אני גם אוהבת את ההפתעה של לראות את האיורים בפעם הראשונה. 

בסופו של דבר נכנעתי, והשיחה עם שירלי הובילה לחוויה מאירת עיניים: לדבר על הדברים, לחפש רעיונות לתמונות, לשוחח על הדמויות ולחשוב על הספר שלי בצורה שלא חשבתי מעולם. שירלי גם הוסיפה, שהשיחה היתה עבורה מאוד משמעותית, מאחר ואנגלית היא לא שפת האם שלה, וכך היא יכלה באמת להבין לעומק את הסיפור. 

להיות חלק מ- SCBWI העניק לי הבנה עמוקה מה איורים מעניקים לסיפורים שלנו. אחרי הכל, ספר ילדים עובד יחד עם איורים,. לא קל ליצור את שניהם, ושניהם חיוניים לחלוטין אחד לשני.

לאורך השנים, למדתי רבות ממאיירים, מנהלים אמנותיים, סוכנים ומו"לים בתוכניות SCBWI על האופן בו מילים ואיורים משחקים יחד כדי ליצור ספרים מצויינים, שילדים והורים אוהבים. זה עזר לי להיות סופרת טובה יותר ואף קוראת ספרים טובה יותר, שמבינה ומעריכה את קסם האיור. לדוגמה, כיום אני נהנית להבחין באלמנטים המופיעים באיורים אך אינם חלק מהטקסט – אלמנטים אלה נובעים היישר מדמיונו של המאייר ומעשירים פלאים את הסיפור..
