While some aspects of the mentorship are changing, the basic concept remains the same: you work with a mentor for an extended period of time to sharpen your skills and polish your project. The other thing that remains the same is that people have questions. There are a lot of moving parts, so of course you do! But we have answers.
A novel mentorship is for YA and MG novelists who are seeking support to improve their manuscript.
Once selected, the mentor and mentee will work together to set up a schedule for sending materials back and forth, when they will meet, and determining the goals for the mentorship. As the mentee, you will get to be specific about what you want for feedback and your goals for the collaboration.
The winner will receive a “golden ticket” to submit their mentorship project to an acquiring editor or agent. This respected professional will be hand-picked and approved by our executive team, so you know you will be paired with a reputable leader in the field.
After you have registered you will receive access to a Google form. As a part of that form, you will submit ten pages of the manuscript that you hope to work on with the mentor. This will need to be in either a PDF or Word Doc format.
No. This is a limitation with our Google account.
Please reach out to the Mentorship Coordinator, Jessica Zimmerman, at [email protected] if you need additional support.

Yes. You will receive an email confirmation of your submission.
All materials must be submitted by 11:59pm EST on January 11, 2026. Failure to send materials by the deadline (or failure to follow submission guidelines) will invalidate your registration without a refund.
Don’t put your name on any submission materials unless specified in the submission guidelines, and don’t announce on social media that you are entering.
Yes. The mentorship is open to all Michigan members.
Your first draft does not need to be completed, but should be in range of being completed by April, 2026. While you aren't required to work on your full manuscript with your mentor, doing so will give you the most feedback before submitting to the agent or editor at the end of the mentorship process (something that comes along with your win!).
