From the breeze over the bayou to the White House gardens in full bloom, award-winning author Kathi Appelt is the master of creating vivid landscapes that jump off the page and are almost characters unto themselves.

During this one hour workshop Kathi will draw from her experience as an award winning author and faculty member at the Vermont College of Fine Arts to explore the landscape’s vital role in the writing process.

This workshop is suitable for beginning and professional writers of any genre, from picture books to novels and beyond.

The Landscape in Layers

One of the most asked questions when it comes to writing is: Do you start with character or do you start with plot? It's so common that the arguments for either one have become a little dull, haven't they? I mean, who cares? You can't really separate the plot from the character or vice versa, and the argument is a little tired. But what if there was something else that you can use to start your story, something that is not so limited, something too often diminished or overlooked. In other words, the landscape.

Where in the big, wide world is your character standing, running, sleeping? Where are they making tracks? Let's take a look at how the many layers of a landscape can propel your story forward and enrich it with depth and wonder.  Bring some paper and be prepared to explore.
