Howdy! Our goal as a regional team is to continue this region's 30+ year tradition of supporting the talented kid lit creators in Brazos Valley. We look forward to welcoming new creators to the group and are dedicated to making sure our region is inclusive and reflects the diversity of our state. All the events, meetings, programs and parties in the region are planned by our volunteers.

The following volunteer leaders make up the Regional Team:
The Regional Advisor (RA) Romy Natalia Goldberg manages the region and pre-approves all events and activities that occur within the region, with some items subject to approval by the Global Regional Advisor Coordinators and/or the Director of Regional Team Management, in accordance with guidelines set by headquarters.
The Assistant Regional Advisor (ARA) Lydia Scott assists the RA with various tasks and administrative duties as needed, provides support for region programs, and assists with the management of local volunteers.
The Illustrator Coordinator (IC), in addition to working with the team, is specifically tasked with supporting the region’s illustrator members.
A Translator Coordinator (TC), in addition to working with the team, is specifically tasked with supporting the region’s translator members. A region must have 10 or more members who work in translation to qualify for a TC.
The RA, ARA, IC, and TC work together as a team, with all activities and programs focused on fostering creative community within the region. Time devoted to SCBWI responsibilities varies greatly depending on a region’s level of activity, local volunteer engagement, and other factors. In general, five hours per week is a fair minimum estimate. For RAs, the minimum may be higher.
Perks, guidance, and support
All SCBWI Regional Team members are volunteers. Payment, employment, and/or benefits are never implied. However, there are many unique perks of the volunteer experience that RTs can enjoy:
- RTs receive free membership in SCBWI while serving and, after they retire, receive additional complimentary years depending on the length and type of volunteer service.
- RTs may be eligible for free or reduced registration for SCBWI’s international conferences, as well as at many regional events around the world.
- Depending on the organization’s annual budget, RTs may be eligible for travel stipends to attend in-person international conferences.
- RTs may apply for professional development grants that are offered only to RTs. RTs have the opportunity to personally meet and connect with industry professionals such as agents, editors, art directors, and well-known authors, illustrators, and translators.
- RTs belong to a worldwide network of supportive, enthusiastic volunteers, and forge new and lasting friendships among a unique group of creatives.
Whether published or not, SCBWI’s RTs are viewed by members of the publishing industry around the world as skilled community leaders dedicated to our mission, vision, and values.
All in all, RTs have a remarkable opportunity to make a difference in their local creative community of writers, illustrators, translators and, most of all, young readers.
Positions & Responsibilities
OPEN POSITION: Monthly Newsletter Editor -
If a 30% open rate makes your heart flutter, this position is for you! Love shaping stories and building community? Have experience creating newsletters in Constant Contact, or want to learn? We’re looking for our next newsletter editor for the Brazos Valley region. If you enjoy organizing content and spotlighting our members, this is a great way to get involved with our local chapter!
Estimated time commitment: 3 hours per month
Training and Assets: You will have access to Constant Contact training (as well as help from the RA). All graphics and templates are provided. Most copy also provided.
Compensation: While this position does not come with a free membership (currently), RA Romy Natalia Goldberg will do everything in her power to help you in your publishing journey!

Volunteer Team Positions
Social Media Coordinator - Whitney Whitener
Work directly with the RA and ARA to maintain our chapter’s social media accounts (public Facebook page and private members only Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter/X) sharing event reminders and pertinent SCBWI information. Estimated workload is 1-2 hours per week. This is a volunteer position that comes with a free 1-year SCBWI membership and access to print and digital editions of Publisher's Weekly. PAL Coordinator - Molly Blaisdell
Support published and listed authors with events and opportunities for sales and professional development.This is a volunteer position that comes with a free 1-year SCBWI membership and access to print and digital editions of Publisher's Weekly.
Website & Graphics Coordinator - Angela Turner
Work directly with the RA and ARA to maintain our chapter’s website.
- Learn how to run the SCBWI Brazos Valley website via SCBWI training materials and one on one sessions with the RA
- Create event graphics in Canva
- Create listings on our website for our twice monthly free events and occasional paid events. Update existing pages and create new pages of the website as needed.
After initial training sessions, estimated workload is 1-2 hours per week.
The Coordinator will need to have been an SCBWI member for at least 6 months Experience with website development is not necessary (there is no coding involved) though the ideal candidate should enjoy creating web content and be familiar with or willing to learn Canva.

Event Coordinator *Open position*
Help coordinate local events such as our yearly MFA in a Day conference, creativity retreats, workshops and webinars. You will be guaranteed face time with any faculty that attend, in person or otherwise.
