Welcome to SCBWI California: San Francisco North and East Bay!

SCBWI SF North & East Bay serves Alameda, Contra Costa, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties. We're a diverse and vibrant community of writers and illustrators focused on creating children's literature. Through workshops, critiques, networking events, and our Oktoberfest conference, we help each other grow as creators and storytellers. You can select your events of preference and receive announcements just for those events.

Alchemy of Pain - Writing Workshop

Our very own L. Michelle Quraishi (Hamline MFAC ‘25) will be leading a writing workshop on fictional pathways for metabolizing trauma through children’s literature. She will share key findings from her award-winning critical thesis: “The Alchemy of Pain: Four Pathways for Metabolizing Trauma in Children’s Literature.” Then, using mentor texts for inspiration and writing exercises from Pat Schneider’s work with writing in community, we will explore together the ways in which story offers healing to readers and storytellers alike. This will be a gentle introduction to the techniques that writers of all formats can use to go deeper in their work, to touch the very heart of the human condition. The event is open to ALL kidlit creators, members and nonmembers alike.
